From our Reserve Collection.

Though Taiwan’s tea production is considerably less than other major tea growing regions throughout the world, its tea industry has successfully focused on quality over quantity and currently grows some of the world’s best oolongs.  Taiwan produces less than 20,000 tons of tea each year, concentrating primarily on premium oolongs–a vast majority of which are consumed domestically. Most Taiwanese tea gardens are very small operations compared to their Chinese and Indian counterparts and many of them are still family owned.

Taiwan is a small, mountainous island located just 90 miles from mainland China. Often, Taiwanese oolongs are still referred to as formosas, the name originally given to the island by Portugese explorers in the late 1500s.  Chinese immigrants first introduced tea plants to Taiwan in the late 1600s and by the end of the 1700s a robust tea trade had begun to develop. Our Yuzu Oolong is grown within the district of Nantou in Central Taiwan, a region responsible for nearly half of all the tea produced in Taiwan.

Though oolong teas were first cultivated in China over 400 years ago, Taiwan’s tea industry is much younger and oolongs were only introduced to Taiwan within the last 150 years.  Oolongs came to dominate the Taiwanese tea industry within the last thirty to forty years.

Yuzu Oolong is a great choice for first thing in the morning paired with toast and marmalade.  It also works well with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines.

We recommend steeping Yuzu Oolong for 3 minutes at 195°.  High altitude oolongs are well known for their ability to withstand multiple steeps so be sure to re-infuse the same leaves up to five times.
